Cowies Hill Pre-Primary is a private Christian school providing
pre-primary education in a warm and caring environment, developing
well-rounded confident individuals taking special care of their
physical, intellectual and emotional needs.
Our Baby Bears Group is for babies between 3 months and 14
months old.
The group is split into two, a younger baby group for babies
from 3 to 6 months (or when they begin crawling) and an older
babies group for those that are crawling and more
active. Each baby has their own schedule that the teachers follow,
and we endeavour to keep their schedule as close to what they
are used to from home. We have experienced and caring staff who create a safe and
nurturing environment for the babies. There are programs for
physical, social, emotional and cognitive development and our
babies are kept busy and stimulated throughout the day.
Our activities are all age-appropriate and include outdoor and
indoor play, music, art, sensory play, water play and story
time. Their little minds are taking everything they see and
hear in, and we hope to foster a love of learning that will
last a lifetime.
Tiggers
Our Tiggers Group is for children between 14 months and 2.5
years old. This group is all about learning through play in a safe and
secure environment. At this age there is focus on the child’s
social and emotional development, and they are learning simple
life lessons such as learning to share, waiting their turn as
well as playing amicably with their peers. The children engage in a lot of sensory play as well as
creative art activities. There is a lot of outdoor play where
the children can develop their gross motor skills by using the
age-appropriate facilities in their own designated garden
area. The older children in the group are taken out to the
“big garden” when there are no other children there, where
they can ride the bikes and use the rest of the school’s
outdoor facilities.
Green Group
Our Green Group is for children from 2 – 3 years old. This age group learns through play and a lot of fun,
sensory-based activities are incorporated throughout the daily
programme. The children’s gross motor skills are being
developed throughout the day. The children in this class are
being potty trained. There is a lot of one-on-one fine motor activities done in
the classroom and the children learn basic concepts such as
the primary and secondary colours and basic shapes and
learning to count. All their learning is done through fun
songs and games / activities as this is the best way for
children to learn. Routine at this age is important and the children are
learning simple life skills such as sitting nicely in a
circle, waiting their turn, listening to instructions,
speaking nicely, etc.
Blue Group
Our Blue Group is our 000 class which is for children from 3
to 4 years old. Teaching the children to be independent in as many areas as
possible is important at this age. Therefore, the children are
encouraged to dress and undress on their own, pack and unpack
their own bags and lunches, and to walk into school
independently if they can. The children engage in activities throughout the day that
work on developing both their gross motor and fine motor
skills. The children are building on the social and emotional
skills they have already started to learn. In developing their
social and emotional skills, the teachers like to instil good
manners, kindness and empathy in the children, as well as
reminding them to share and to take turns. The children do Groupwork during their “Skills” time. This
allows the children to get individual attention in a small
group setting.
Red Group
Our Red Group is our 00 class and is for children from 4 to 5
years old. This age group are growing in independence more and more.
There is emphasis on the development of the whole child and we
like to instil a love for learning through fun
activities. There is an age-appropriate Language and Literacy programme
that the children follow and they participate in various songs
and fun games to enhance their learning. The children also
start learning some simple Zulu greetings and songs. The children learn age-appropriate Numeracy concepts.
Groupwork is done during Skills time where each child gets
one-on-one attention and time to work with the teacher to
develop and strengthen their skills and understanding. The children are at a very important stage in their social
and emotional development and they are learning many valuable
life lessons throughout the day. This is the age where they
start developing proper little friendships and they are
learning to be kind, caring and empathetic to one
another.
Grade R
Our Grade R is our Reception Year and is for children from 5
to 6 years old. Our Grade R is well equipped and is a more structured day
compared to the rest of the school as the children are being
prepared for formal schooling. There is still plenty of time
for the children to play, and we believe in hands-on learning
through play. Our curriculum is a blend of the CAPS curriculum and the
ISASA ECD curriculum. We like to extend the children and
prepare them as best as possible for grade 1. Our Grade R programme has three areas of focus namely
Numeracy, Literacy and Life Skills. We like to instil good
morals and values in the children and in particular having
good manners and respect is important. There is a growing emphasis on independence and on listening
skills in Grade R. We do groupwork and whole class activities
in Grade R. Groupwork is important as it helps the children to
have one-on-one time with the teacher.
